Child-safe window treatment

You know that children are natural explorers, and a dangling chain can be an irresistible attraction for them. This is why choosing child-safe window treatments for your home is top priority.

The United States dedicates an entire month to emphasize the importance of safe window treatments – National Window Covering Safety Month, celebrated every October. The month is all about raising awareness on the potential suffocation risk associated with corded window treatment.

The mission of this month is clear: to empower parents, caregivers, and homeowners with the knowledge and resources needed to create a safer environment for their children.

Tips for child-safety with a low budget

We understand that you might not have the means to replace all your window treatment, but here is what you can do with a low budget.

  • Move beds, furniture and toys away from cords and chains

  • Do not tie any cords together. Make sure the cords do not twist and create a loop.

  • Anchor cords and chains to the wall at a height of at least 150cm. For example with our Tension pulley (see image) or Wall mount safety box. This is can be used on all Forest corded curtain tracks and blinds.

Instructions Safety Box

The Wall mount safety box is a fixed tensioning system and prevents the chain loop from becoming slack. The control chain must be placed at a distance of at least 150 cm from the floor.

Step 1) Position the tension wheel (item A) in a proper position that allows the ball chain to go through the pulley guide as indicated in the picture. Ensure the ball chain is entirely lowered, stretched and tangle free. Mark the position.

Step 2) Drill a hole and insert the wall plug. Screw the device to the wall (item B).

Step 3) Place the ball chain through the pulley guide and click the wheel down to put tension in the chain (item C).

Snap cord fixer clips

For our roman blinds, BS, BS Max and BCS (motorised), we have an extra child-safety accessory. The cords at the back of the roman blind can create a situation where a child gets trapped, but the snap cord fixer clips prevent this. They release as soon as a child of 6kg or more is in danger of becoming entangled in it.

Child safety control unit

For the BS® roman blind, we offer a child safety control unit. The control unit prevents children from getting entangled in the chain/cord. When more than 6kg is hanging on the gear wheel, it will automatically release, preventing suffocation.

The gear wheel also complies with the safety standard so that children cannot swallow it.

Our BS® Child Safety components have been extensively tested by a reputable agency and comply with the European child safety standard and come with a certificate. The Child Safety components can be recognised by our Child Safety label.

Other options for child-safe window treatment

If you want to avoid cords altogether, motorised window covering can be the solution for you. All our motorised systems are cord- and chainless and are therefore child-safe. Only our motorised roman blind, BCS®, makes use of cords, but can be made child-safe with the snap cord fixer clips mentioned earlier.Take a look at our motorised systems.
